Groundhog Day has come & gone (also known as Cassie's birthday--10 this year!). Accordingly to the furry prognostigators that likely reside in our little corner of Puget Sound, we are most definitely up for 6 more weeks of winter cuz--don't ya know--the mountains were out in rare (clear) form yesterday. Beautiful! That also translates to still very burr-berries--especially after the sun goes down on these still-too-short days. Can't feel too sorry for ourselves, though, when I read about winter in Chicago for Joe this year. (Hang in there, buddie!)
Fat Tuesday is upon us--this year, greatly over-shadowed by Super Tuesday. Getting nervous at the voting prospects staring us all in the face, and thinking that there will be much to discuss/reflect on after that fateful day has come & gone. May the force be with us all...

What is a 1/2 yard of fabric compared to 5inch squares? Do you have to cut the 1/2 yard into 4" or 5" squares?
...so hence the name, 'fat Tuesday?'--guess I never thought it was quite so literal 8-)
Material is usually 42" wide; a yard is 36" (so 1/2 yd being 18")--so do the math: about 24-5" squares in a 1/2 yd?
Fat quarters are pretty much unique to the quilting world (and fitting for Fat Tuesday discussion): usually if you ask for a quarter yard of fabric you get 1/4 of a yard (or 9") across the width of the fabric (salvage to salvage). Not so much you can do with that long, skinny piece.
So if shop owners are amind, they cut into 'fat quarters' which are 1/2 yard pieces cut in half, up & down (rather than across the width of the fabric)--so they are usually about 18" x 18". Gives more options for use--and also more variety in the fabric, as most prints repeat about every 24".

On politics: compare Hillary's health care plan to Obama's and all others. Note too that the Reps are not discussing health care. As you know,the current fed budget is cutting again..Hillary's Plan is the most universal. JB
